Kevin Newcomb on [ClickZ News] :
“The targeting came to the attention of a New York City-based ClickZ editor when an ad for a nearby single-location spa showed up on an RSS feed for a blog about Apple Computers. The same ad was targeted to other editors in New York, but not to others outside the city. The ad did not seem to be contextually targeted, but entirely targeted by location.
Advertisers cannot specifically target RSS ads locally, but regionally or locally targeted ads within Google’s content network could potentially be shown in feeds as well as on Web sites. Both the location of the user and content of the feed are contributing factors to targeting the ads, with the content of the feed being the primary factor in targeting, Ghosemajumder said.
Many advertisers may not care whether their ads show up on Web sites or in Web feeds, as long as the ads perform as expected. In some cases, location-based targeting in RSS feeds could be a perfect fit for some advertisers, according to Mike Marshall, VP of technology at SEM and blog advertising firm Fortune Interactive.”

Here’s another good thing :
Bambi Francisco of MarketWatch declared that Google would be launching a classified listing service today.
This is particularly interesting because Google seems to be saying, “Screw scraping content from all the online classified providers. We’ll empower our own users to dictate the content that’s on Google and manage the whole process themselves.”
If they launch job listings, how long will it take employers to jump the Good Ship Monster and list their openings on Google and leverage the power of the world’s most powerful information provider … for FREE?

** [John Battelle] reports of another China hire by Google
Johnny Chou will join Google as President, Sales and Business
Development, Greater China. In this newly created role, Chou will be
responsible for building Google’s sales and channel businesses, and
expanding the company’s strategic partnerships in the region.

** Google Maps Chat
There’s a chat application that uses the Google Maps API/ Ajax to display “speech bubble” like info-boxes at user locations. It’s not tight, there’s some usability issues, Philipp blogs.
** Google Update Effects Web Businesses
There is a thread at Digital Point about web publishers who were kicked out of Google or lost significant ranking during the lastest Google “Jagger” Update. Some of those publishers are claiming substancial loses which brings back memories of the “Florida” Update years ago when Google finally cleaned up their index and booted a good amount of sites which used questionable results manipulating tactics (different from SEO). Here’s a rundown of reactions in the Cost of Jagger.

Several people report Google Base (as predicted yesterday) went live, or at least, its login-screen. Philipp can’t reach it at the moment, which I can confirm ( not authorized to view this page) as it seems Google took it down again, but Dirson posted a screenshot to Flickr. So what is it?
From [Dirson] > [GoogleBlogoscoped]
“Post your items on Google.
Google Base is Google’s database into which you can add all types of content. We’ll host your content and make it searchable online for free.
Examples of items you can find in Google Base:
• Description of your party planning service
• Articles on current events from your website
• Listing of your used car for sale
• Database of protein structures
You can describe any item you post with attributes, which will help people find it when they search Google Base. In fact, based on the relevance of your items, they may also be included in the main Google search index and other Google products like Froogle and Google Local.”
Sorry ’bout the delay. I had to deal with some non-web issues first.

[37Signals] : Google has reintroduced their Google Web Accelerator with a vengeance. It was evil enough the first time around, but this time it’s downright scary.
Randy : There’s one part of Web Accelerator that I’ve always feared and that’s inadvertent clicks by the end-user. Image if you using a Web mailer and you get SPAM. Not hard to image, that’s a large fraction of the Internet users. Those SPAMmers will now put links in your emails that effectively act as a ping, telling them that somebody just read their email. Helping SPAMmers figure out which email accounts are actively read doesn’t sound like a good idea. Now, use your imagination and figure out what else will be done with this security hole.

Coolz0r : Hmm. Damn. That doesn’t look good at all.
