Gmail Goes Down

By Nathan Weinberg

It seems every weekend, we lose another Google service or two. This time, it was Gmail. Last time, the Google cache, and before that, all of Google was inaccessible. Reports coming in from a variety of sources, including Dave Winer, Utills in the comments, and Coolzor via IM. Who else noticed this?

For some people, losing Gmail is worse than losing Google search. I can always use Yahoo or MSN Search while Google is inaccessible, but if Gmail had all my email, I’d be lost.

I agree, it kind of sucks when it goes down because it is my primary email now, but I had confidence it would be back asap.

    Trouble in Gmail-land

Reports around the blogosphere indicate that Gmail had an outage this weekend. I was rarely connected and thus didn’t notice.

Trouble in Gmail. gmail is our main e mail account. Frequent Server down affects our transaction & force us to think to shift to other web sites.

Can’t access from Tokyo at the moment. Not good, considering I’m flying to Europe tomorrow and need the ticketing details that are only on my GMail account.

It’s the first time I’ve had problems with it, though. Shame on me for using webmail as a primary address.
But on the other side of the coin, I’d rather they stop spending $$ on upping my mail limit to 2+ gig that I doubt I will be using anytime soon, and feed that back into stability and redundancy instead.

  14. Rob Says:

We lost Gmail In Phila. PA today

  15. Jack Says:

…and the lesson is, have more than two webmails (gmail, and hotmail, and yahoo, and lycos…) and cc everything important everywhere - like ticketing details (if you must.

I can’t log into Gmail at work today, yet I could at home just an hour or so ago. I hear it might be a software (IE version) issue; in addition, my home pc is only on Win98 at the mo, a world away from what these beasts at work work on.

  16. Jack Says:

Yes this is IE 6.0, I’ve read elswhere that Gmail prefers IE 5.X

  22. cdale Says:

Well, since this popped up in the search, I figured I’d put a comment here saying that I’m pretty frustrated right now, because I am trying to get in touch with loved ones in the gulf coast area via text message, and am waiting for responses. And, of course, gmail is down. I guess I should’ve used my yahoo account. Guh.

Gmail has been down for 6 hours now on the east coast. I am wondering if the fact that they just started honoring all the gmail reservations has anything to do with this. Probably can not handle the traffic, which is not a good sign.
