Using Gmail Instead Of Adobe Reader

Lifehacker offers a good tip for those using systems where they can’t install Adobe Reader (or those who just don’t want the bloated piece of crap): Use Gmail. Just email the PDF to yourself, and Gmail will give you the option of reading it converted into HTML. Cool deal, homes.

If you can’t say no to the Adobe Reader, here’s my handy guide to optomizing Reader 7 to run a hell of a lot faster (70% 90%, if I had to come up with a percentage).

  1. Or if you’ve never heard of it, you might want to try Foxit Reader. It’s crazy fast. I will NEVER use Adobe again.

    Only 70% faster, is that all??? Try these numbers:

    before optimization: wait at least 15 secs for Adobe Reader to fire up, regardless of document size.

    after optimization: INSTANTANEOUS Adobe Reader fire-up and access to the documents, regardless of size!

    I consider that a 10.000% improvement, actually.

  4. Yeah, you’re probably right. I forgot how slow Reader used to run, since I always optimize it now. It used to take anywhere from 15-40 seconds, depending on what I was doing. I just timed it at four seconds.

Hablo de tener que abrir un documento PDF (por ejemplo) en un ordenador ajeno, normalmente públicos, y no disponer del programa adecuado instalado ni poder descargarte uno. En este caso lo que debes hacer es mandarte el PDF a tu cuenta de Gmail y desde allí abrirlo usando el previsualizador en HTML que para una urgencia puede valerte perfectamente.
