Yahoo’s 20 Most Misspelled Words

Yahoo recently published the twenty most commonly misspelled words on their search engine. They are:

  1. Wallmart (Wal-Mart)
  2. Rachel Ray (Rachael Ray)
  3. Amtrack (Amtrak)
  4. Hillary Duff (Hilary Duff)
  5. Katherine McPhee (Katharine McPhee)
  6. Britany Spears (Britney Spears)
  7. Geneology (Genealogy)
  8. Jaime Pressley (Jaime Pressly)
  9. Volkswagon (Volkswagen)
  10. Wikepedia (Wikipedia)
  11. William Sonoma (Williams-Sonoma)

  17. Brittney Spears (Britney Spears)
  18. Avril Lavinge (Avril Lavigne)
  19. Rianna (Rihanna)
  20. Jordan Sparks (Jordin Sparks)

With rare exceptions (Wikipedia being an obvious one), this list is a sad proof that for the most part, the people who are fans of the people on this list are oftentimes uneducated dopes. I already suspected that, but it’s nice to have some almost proof.

  1. I’m not even close to being perfect, I think I died a little on the inside while reading this list.

    Somehow, I think Google’s top 20 looks significantly different. I couldn’t

  2. Is it sad that I knew how to spell every celebrity’s name on the list? I think it is.

  6. “the most part, the people who are fans of the people on this list are oftentimes uneducated dopes.” — is that your professional opinion? For the most part, those who mispells are those people who pretend to be fans or who are paid to write about somebody they hardly know about. As one of Kellie’s top site, we’ve read news coverage about her since day one. We’ve never encountered a fan site, be it from myspace OR a dedicated site, that mispelled her name but we have encountered such from CNN, NBC, WCNC, Yahoo, and other prestigious media sources. Fans are “dopes” ?? Who are you to judge?

  7. Kellie, you’re right, some of the fans aren’t uneducated, just have bad taste. You might be educated, just have the bad luck to be a fan of next year’s punchlines (or in some cases, this year’s).

Why do you feel the need to defend fans of Rachael Ray, Hilary Duff, Katharine McPhee, Britney Spears, Elliott Yamin, Keira Knightley, Kellie Pickler, Avril Lavigne, Rihanna, and Jordin Sparks? If you are educated enough, you’ll be able to name twenty other such young “sensations” that dissapeared quite quickly from the public eye.

Now please, excuse me. I need to watch Luke Perry fight with Jason Priestley over Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Tori Spelling while Alicia Silverstone tells LeAnn Rimes how cute Joey Lawrence is compared Joshua Jackson, while secretly hating Melissa Joan Hart for kissing Edward Furlong and David Faustino while Macaulay Culkin watched Nick Carter sing with Brandy about Elizabeth Berkley.

  8. Oh, I didn’t realize you were specifically defending Kellie Pickler, whose singular claim to fame is finishing sixth on American Idol and a somewhat successful (546,000 selling) country music album. While I am by no means denying the talent of Miss Pickler (because I have never heard her sing), it would be ridiculous to point to her celebrity as anything but the product of a celebrity obsessed culture and teen hysteria over a silly TV show.

Come back to me in five to ten years, and let me know of her staying power. I wouldn’t be surprised I have more staying power as a moderately successful blogger than she has as moderately successful singer. After all, more people read this website every month than have ever purchased an album of hers.

I’m not dissing the artist, just a fanbase that refuses to admit that it continuously gets behind the same fleeting “celebrities” without understanding the difference between someone we should be caring about and someone we’ll forget. We should be paying attention to young actors like Shane West, and not the latest flash-in-the-pan idiot like Orlando Bloom, and there are a million examples like that.

But seriously, isn’t this blog supposed to be about Google? :-)

  9. LOL, ignorent! WELL lets see i am a huge kellie pickler fan, i am not a teen, nor have i been a fan since idol..
i am however 30 years old, and actually missed every episode of american idol last year ( season 5) so, my dear, there is a bigger fan base then the teens, and idol fanatics. not sayin there is anything wrong with idol, not at all.just that some ppl need to keep there mouth shut unless they know what they are talkin about. infact i know tons of kellie fans who are well,,,, 20+ years older then i am. Kellie does have talent , alot of talent, and stayin power. She is an amazing person, and very inspiring, i would recomend listening to her sing , before opening your mouth..lol, after all u did say u have NOT even heard her sing ,but yet u comment about her. Don’t just listen to her vocals ,try learning a bit about her, i am sure you , then would too, fall in love with this young women. As so many other ppl have! she has a very captivating personality! and a life story that would break your heart, thus the reason she wrote ” i wonder” her latest single climbing the charts!
Get to know a little about her, and you would see we should be caring about kellie pickler.. and we DO!
    as for u in 5 - 10 years..lol , who are you again?

  10. Allie, you are defending Ms. Pickler, but I was not making light of her, but rather her fans. I am sure you are a nice, educated person (in spite of your many misspellings), but the typical Pickler fan is the typical Idol fan, and that means teenage girls who can’t spell. That’s not even a knock against them, since I don’t know who expects teenage girls to be able to spell, what with our educational system and the instant/text messaging environment that encourages things like “ppl” and “u” (both of which you used).

I guess what I’m saying is that it is a sad testament to these artists that they have so much trouble branching beyond the airheaded high school girl demographic.

  11. lol, i type like that to make it faster just as the teenagers do. lol ,if “u”
want to think that i am thats fine. but “U” are wrong, my “b-day” (( lol oops misspelled word again)) is 6-10-1977. which makes far from a teenager. just because i type using text words, or shorten ‘abr.’ for words does not make me a teenager. But, you on the other hand are still ignorant!

  12. Dear Nathan

I would be interesred to know the date when the word Saviour took on the incorrect spelling of Savior in the US. (This is not a criticism of the US, you are great people and the worst thing to happen to music was when British “POP” garbage took over in this country from the greats like Elvis, Jerry Lee etc.)
At some point it must have been decided to change the spelling as people like George Whitefield and John Wesley did not bring different versions of The Bible to America.
Perhaps someone has some old bibles or hymn books that will indicate when the change took place.
I do find the English language a fascinating subject and coming from rural North Yorkshire, the spoken word in this area sounds like a different language.

    God Bless
