YouTube Running Ads Under Videos

Video-under-ad

YouTube has started running ads underneath certain partner videos. The ads take the form of those same annoying ads that appear onscreen during many cable programs, though thankfully without the audio that sometimes accompanies the worst of them (I’m looking at you FX). You can see them right now during this Kellie Pickeler music video. Above is a slideshow showing you the ads.

At first, when watching the video, two gold areas appear within the YouTube progress bar, one a little bit into the video, and one at the end. When the video reaches that part, the ad swings in, animates and overlays the bottom portion of the screen. After it is done, it goes away, but a little button lets you call it back up. Click the ad, and a new video overlays the first one (the first one pauses) and plays a full advertisement, in this case the trailer for the Lindsay Lohan thriller, “I Know Who Killed Me”. You cannot pause or progress through the video, but you can close it, and clicking it goes to the advertiser landing page, in this case the official movie website.

On the one hand, it’s a slick ad unit, on the other its the kind of ad that annoys me while watching TV. It’s tolerable on YouTube, but it could get tricky, especially if advertisers are allowed to use any audio.

  2. […] I am not a big fan of video ads, though I am aware of it’s importance to the company’s bottomline, and ultimately to the video site’s capacity to remain free to the users. But I think the key in any decision to put ads in any media is how it is actually implemented. For example, watching ads in CNET videos really ticks me off because the stream is already slow in the first place, then they put an ad that makes it load even slower. So as I said, if Google implements an ad for youtube that doesn’t ruin the user experience, then I think that would be a good thing, both for the company and its (youtube) users. I have to agree with you that the ad as your slideshow shows is slick, and honestly, it passes my personal test of a good ad implementation. Kudos to Google/Youtube.

  7. […] The YouTube blog today announced the official release of InVideo ads, the ads we’ve seen on YouTube recently that feature a brief overlay on the bottom of the video that can be clicked to see further information about the advertisers. The ads are being offered to a much larger group of 1,000 video creators, including YouTube’s mainstream content providers, like Warner Music and the BBC, and many popular regular YouTube users.
