Google Watch Releases Ad-Free Google

Daniel Brandt, Google’s number one critic, has open-sourced the code for Google Watch’s ad-free Google proxy, Scroogle. The information is at this page, download the source code here, and check out Scroogle here.

Brandt says that he believes that the code is covered by “fair use” under the Copyright Act. He explains that he is releasing the proxy code in hopes of forcing Google into court, so he can get them to reveal what sort of personal information they keep on searchers.

By releasing the source code for our proxy, we’re trying to escalate the issue.

  1. I’ve seen similar things before, they usually end up shut down, it wouldn’t surprise me if this ends in the same way. Of course he may get his wish and find himself in court.
