Yahoo Desktop Search Launches

Yahoo has released its desktop search offering, arriving last to the game with a product it claims is faster than its competitors. I’m just installing the product, so we’ll see how well that, and other claims stack up, but here’s what’s different from this and other products:

  • Preview window - Now, I was surprised when I discovered that Jeeves Desktop Search’s preview window was actually more annoying than useful, so we’ll see if this one is any better.
  • Search as you type - another feature that is a matter of personal preference, and not one of my preferences.
  • Over 200 file types indexed - other products claim a lot of file types, but unless YDS can read the contents of those files, being able to look at them isn’t all that interesting. We’ll see…
  • Right-click context menus - I cannot stress how important it is to be able to do everything with a right-click that you can do with Windows Explorer, and Yahoo says it adds options, like reply, print, others.

Two things I don’t like already: The splash screen lies on top of other windows, refusing to let you see what’s below it. I don’t like splash screens anyway, but these kinds are the worst. Also, by default it indexes newsgroups. Why? When I tried to get it to stop, it crashed from too many newsgroups, and I had to restart the program to fix it.
