Google Hits The Slopes

Google is embarking on its annual company ski trip, paying to send every single of its 2,000 employees on a fun-filled week of snow and ski bunnies. C|Net reports that Google is staying at as many as five hotels in the Squaw Valley area. One of them, the Resort at Squaw Creek, renting all 404 rooms, which normally command $294 a night, which, if they were paying full price, would total $118,776 for each night the company stays there. The amenities will be substantial, with spa treatments and the Olympic grade moguls at the Squaw Valley ski resort. More from C|Net:

Thursday is the grand celebration night for newly wealthy staffers, whose company’s $1.9 billion initial public offering netted hundreds if not thousands of millionaires, on paper at least. Party tents, bands and catered food will stretch out across the typically car-packed and snow- or sludge-filled parking lot of central Squaw Valley. “It’s not a typical weekend up here,” said one employee of the central reservation group.

The company has even hired a videographer to film a Warren Miller-esque ski flick of various employees carving up the bumps.

I suspect that, at best, this tradition can’t possibly last more than one more year. By 2007 the company will be too big for such an undertaking, and will probably anyway be the type of serious company which doesn’t do these sort of things.

  1. Funny how it’s OK to spend a few hundred grand on some inane marketing research but not on making your employees fanatical about your company.

  2. It might be the flu, but I have absolutely no idea what that was a reference to.

  6. Thanks, z. I’m improving, but just when I think I’ve got this bug licked, it rears up again and slaps me down.
