Google Developing Collaborative Software?

Phillip Lensen reports that a source close to Google has told him Google is developing collaborative software that would allow users on different computers to perform tasks together.

Google Extranet Service?
A source close to Google told me Google is working on an extranet service with a Gmail-like interface. The new collaboration software would allow users to upload files, get on the same page together, view thumbnails, perform massive searching, assign tasks to each other and more. I do not have further information yet, nor do I know if this is true, but I emailed Google and will post updates here.

I know Phillip has good sources, but why would Google do this? What does this have to do with organizing the world’s information? Otherwise, what would you call the service?

  1. Hmmm… Sounds to me like maybe they’re expanding Hello to make a bigger IM experience (hello with the ability to search together, etc). I tried Hello the other day; hated it. Hoepfully, if they do venture into IM, they’ll produce something better.

  2. Holy crap. I didn’t even think about Hello. You’re on to something. They probably would build these features right into the client. Very good call.

  3. Now a reason for an even bigger google presence in corporations. Not only will people be using their search appliance, but now companies would be able to have a workgroup application that is available from anywhere in the world through the web.

  4. Is this a parallel virtual machine?

“The virtual machine software allows a single environment to be created spanning multiple computers, so that the end user appears to be using only one computer rather than several.”

“The Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) is a software tool for parallel networking of computers. It is designed to allow a network of heterogeneous machines to be used as a single distributed parallel processor.”
