Google Giving Away Gmail! For Free!
Google is giving out Gmail accounts to random visitors to google.com. You’d almost think they were giving it away for free…
Here’s what you may see (screenshot courtesy of Nirav Patel):
The link is a one-time use link, so don’t bother posting it so others can use it. In fact, if you do share the link, everyone will be able to see the email address you registered.
According to Aaron Swartz, the landing page reads:
Since we launched Gmail in April 2004, we’ve been focused on improving the service, relying on our users to spread the word and invite others to try it out. The response has been great, and now we’re ready for some more Gmail users.[…] As we make room for more Gmail users, we want to first extend invitations to Google users. We’re still working to make Gmail better, so for now, we’re just inviting a small number at random. Looks like that’s you! We’re really excited to share Gmail with you and we hope you like it.
Wow. I’d almost forgotten that Gmail launched almost a year ago. Just 16 days to its first beta birthday, April 1. I can’t wait to see what Google’s April Fools joke will be.
