How R|Mail Makes Things Better

Not so long ago Randy Charles Morin has been coding around the clock to get ‘his’ RSS to SMPT tool ready for use. Let’s see how that goes. It delivers the latest posts of the blogs you’re subscribed to straight into your inbox. There’s a special filter applied that blocks the second, third, etc post within the same hour, so you don’t get a spam-situation. Feel free to check it out.

The benefit of this system, I think, is that it allows you to be in touch with your most preferred blogs without having to surf there to check if there’s an update or not. Every hour, the R|Mail bot will scan the existing (known) RSS feeds, verifying for new entries. When someone has posted a new message/story, you’ll get a very short descriptive message about it in your mailbox, with a permalink that invites you to go there and read the entire post.

What I also like is the fact that there’s no registration necessary, or no login. Every time I’m checking the bloglines aggregator for example, I have to go find my password before I can read anything. My Outlook’s open almost 24/7, so in fact it’s far more handy to read the new posts there. It saves me a lot of time. Of course, you can subscribe yourself to many blogs, but you’ll have to bear in mind that you are ’so’ in control, you actually can flood your own inbox by signing up to multiple blogs. (+15). Luckily there’s also an opt-out included in every mail that’s sent. Gives you the power to interfere whenever necessary. You can also unsubscribe before going on a holiday, and re-subscribe when you return.

For Nathan’s Google blog, it should look like this : (just enter your email address to subscribe)

As for the Microsoft blog at BNC, it would be this : (also just enter your email address to subscribe)

I’m going to ride the waves of glory, and add my own blog’s feed too ;) Coolz0r - Marketing Thoughts (you know the drill)

Want to have it on your own blog? Sure you can ! Here’s the code :

< script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.kbcafe.com/rss/rss2smtp.aspx?rss={your feed URL goes here}">< /script >

You’ll have to close the ’script’ tags, because I had to insert some spaces in order to get it posted.

Let’s share the wealth.
To subscribe to ANY feed, just copy the feed url and paste it here, on the KB Cafe subscription page.

I’ve designed the logo myself, and I say it’s free for you to use it. If you’d like a small tag for your sidebar, feel free to use this item : small image

  1. Yeah, it’s a great service! I’m using this for a few months and works perfectly!

  2. This doesn’t make sense, it’s like you’re going backwards. Bloglines keeps my password (via cookie) on my machine and I don’t clutter my inbox with messages that aren’t to me. It seems weird to have RSS feeds sending you email. It’s like we’re going back to mailing lists!

  3. Farhan, my browser (firefox) deletes all temps and cookies when I close it. I chose to have it this way, in order to minimalize virus stuff and a gulping /temp that slows down my system. Which means I have to enter the username and password again for every browse-session… That’s why I like R|Mail better. The few blogs I’m addicted to, are privileged to enter my world through SMTP. The rest… I’ll visit them myself or stumble upon them through an article in some feedreader’s listing. Cheers, mate !

  4. I see…. still, you could leave Bloglines open in a tab in Firefox, and when you want to read news you could read it there.. I guess I’m trying to keep my email inbox only for personal messages, and all else I use RSS.

  5. True, but my handicap is that I tend to close windows with the red ‘x’ instead of minimizing them. My laziness has already set the ‘close all tabs’ and ‘don’t ask again’ settings… so I guess it’s just a personal choise. I’ll try it tabbed, just for fun :)

  6. Which part of ‘Save Passwords’ you don’t understand?

  7. Do you know how easy it is to retrieve saved passwords that are being kept on a same ’standard’ location? Do you know how fast skilled people can access that info?
I care too much for my data. I don’t believe in passwordkeepers or ‘remember me’ thingies. Call me old-fashioned, if you want. I haven’t had any problems for a year. Except when I installed AOL, that wanted to keep info for me. ;)

  9. Farhan,
Most of my friends (the non-geeky friends) don’t know what RSS is and don’t care either. Now they can subscribe to my blog via email. I provide my readers with that choice. Giving users as many choices is what it’s all about. That translated into about 1800 subscribers to my blogs.

  11. I really like the idea of R|Mail. While I prefer to get my RSS through Bloglines, it should be available as many ways as possible. Lots of people love emailing lists, so this will just get more people to read blogs (like Randy says). The more the merrier. Give me RSS on a news ticker on my wall, on an 800-number, on my cell phone, on my watch, on my clock, on my TV, everywhere. Having it through email also lets you do some cool stuff with it, using all the email hacks out there to display it in cool ways.
