Google Earth Launching For Free? Launches For Free
I heard a rumor that Google is about to officially release Google Earth, its standalone Windows application that combines satellite imagery with Google Local and Google Maps. Best of all, my source says it is going to be completely free. However, this is purely a rumor, and while the source is reputable, the source is not entirely sure. I will officially stake nothing on this rumor, but smugly reserve the right to claim credit if it proves true. Then again, we’ll know very soon enough.
UPDATE: Confirmed! Thank you, sir. I couldn’t have beaten that article by more than ten minutes, but I’ll take it.
UPDATE 2: So, now that we’ve got that out of the way, the details. Google Earth will be made available at earth.google.com shortly as a free download. In fact, its surprising it isn’t there already. The subscription fee is gone, but a $20 fee will get you Google Earth Plus with more features and even more money will buy even bigger versions of the program.
The program lets you do smooth sailing flybyes of the entire Earth. You can easily fly to any spot on the globe, by entering any associated data, like street addresses, place names or lat/long coordinates. There are overlays that put additional information on the map, like roads, international boundaries, terrain, 3D buildings, crime statistics, schools, stadiums, any number of interesting stuff.
You can do Local searches in the program, with icons on the map and a display on the side showing your results. You can leave notes, called “placemarks” all over the map, so you can remember where all sorts of places are. Searches and placemarks can be saved as bookmarks in “My Places”. Everything can be output in an XML format called KML, that will allow the vast popularity of Google Maps to continue in Earth. You can also email a JPEG of the map, or send a KMZ file if you know the recipient has Earth installed.
Google Earth Plus gives higher resolution images, GPS support, and more sophisticated annotation (like drawing on the map). Online help is available right here.

You can set the altitude of placemarks, that remains consistent throughout all views:

UPDATE 3: The download is available now. System requirements:
Minimum configuration:
- Operating system: Windows 2000, Windows XP
- CPU speed: Intel® Pentium® PIII 500 MHz
- System memory (RAM): 128MB
- 200MB hard-disk space
- 3D graphics card: 3D-capable video card with 16MB VRAM
- 1024×768, 32-bit true color screen
- Network speed: 128 kbps (”Broadband/Cable Internet”)
Recommended configuration:
- Operating system: Windows XP
- CPU speed: Intel® Pentium® P4 2.4GHz+ or AMD 2400xp+
- System memory (RAM): 512MB
- 2GB hard-disk space
- 3D graphics card: 3D-capable video card with 32MB VRAM or greater
- 1280×1024, 32-bit true color screen
- Network speed: 128 kbps (”Broadband/Cable Internet”)
I had to download, save, and add “.exe” to the end of the install file, but that’s probably because I’m doing all this as Google is uploading it. I’m sure they’ll fix it, but just be aware of the issue. Also, Googlers, fix the typo on this page (”Googsle Earth”) at the bottom.
Google has put together a Google Earth Sightseeing page with images of famous landmarks, and the KMZ files that will get you there.
UPDATE 4: Installed, and using it. Here are some screenshots (click to enlarge):
The Earth, baby!
The fair city of Manhattan
The Empire State Building, as viewed from overhead
The Empire State Building, as viewed from a tilt. That’s New Jersey in the distance.
The Empire State Building, as viewed in 3D
The streets of midtown Manhattan
UPDATE 5: Final update. I cannot contain how impressed I am with Google Earth. Absolutely, this is a great release. The feeling you get when you double-click on an area and the map glides over, falling into the Earth, with place names and street grids revealing themselves, is stunning and jaw-dropping
Sure, there are things that pissed me off, like it completely sucking at finding residential street addresses, that the satellite maps are one level too blurry to 100% identify any house, and that the road maps are harder to follow than those in Google Maps. All that went away, when Google Earth flew me into my neighborhood, and I started putting placemarks on my bedroom and on the homes of some of my friends. Then, I set up a tour of those locations, and marveled as I was, indeed, taken on an aerial tour of my ‘hood. All the while, street names fluttered in and out as necessary, and most of the stores on Main Street (yes, we have a Main Street in New York, or at least in Queens) had nice labels that appeared on some zoom levels.
Then I turned on the overlays. Now I know how many murders were in Queens in 2000 (187), the population (2229379) (even if the overlay icons were on top of each other, forcing me to shut one off to see the other), see all the pharmacies, gas stations, restuarants, libraries, parking lots, hospitals, banks, airports, fire stations, parks, stadiums, golf courses, churches, trains, movie rental stores, malls, bars, and highway exits in the area, and find out where my ZIP code congressional or school district ends.
Unbelievable. Amazing, absolutely amazing. You will be showing this off to your friends. I’m probably coming off as a little too excited, true, but I just genuinely enjoy using this product. Google did good with this one, and Keyhole did a great job. Bravo!

Nice article. I wonder where you got all the infos so fast

The offering is indeed impressive. The servers seem super fast.
The google “local” data seems still sort of incomplete and random! Another thing they can improve on is the UI. Atleast the one with the free version is not “very” impressive!
Overall seems super and puts Microsofts efforts (in light of past Bill Gates demos and some “inside” video I saw online) to shame!!

I know this because I’ve used both today. (Long story short, I bought a Keyhole license 3 days ago and got a refund when it went free. Very easy process, by the way. Check the help center. Google support rocks!)

Downloaded the free GE this morning. As I live in Finland, I was curious to see whether Helsinki was on the map. It was, but it was situated on top of another city, namely Turku. Some names of Helsinki’s suburbs were smack on the map along with names of places in the country. And wrongly spelled at that.
Didn’t have time to check out all features, as I’m leaving for work, but I’d love to see the Capital of Finland where it belongs and the names spelled correctly.
Have a nice day (morning/afternoon/night)!

D Schlouch Says: “What good is Google Earth if it is not available for MAC users as well?”
Not to be a smartass, but that won’t affect how good it is for Windows users. It’s frustrating, but not a complete indicator of worth. I certainly hope that Google does support all other major OSs, but they are getting the biggest bang per programming buck by doing beta’s to Windows. It’s to be expected, really.
Remember, OS choice goes two ways, for vendors and for users. I personally would like every vender to support Linux. But, that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon. At least Google is basing things like Google Video off of existing GPL, and re-releasing the source.

Not only do you have over 90 percent of the computer market ready to use windows based software but the development tools, like Microsoft.NET (VB.NET and ASP.NET!) are amazing!
Yes you can try to develop software for the Mac and Linux but try to find a job with those skills. You will have a better time with windows programming skills!

Cute to play around with for 30 minutes, but not very useful. They should put resources into doing something useful, like improving Google Maps search technology so that it can actually find addresses that are not perfectly specified. Mapquest, Mappoint, etc. can all do it - why can’t Google?? (it is especially ironic given that Google’s primary product is a search engine!)

Rodan and Phin, you’re a bunch of nitwits. Just because it’s got the highest penetration doesn’t mean sth. as important as Google Earth should only be available for Windows users. It’s perfectly possible to write apps in a platform independent manner, so everyone can enjoy. Why Google should not do that is beyond me. Especially scientific work is frequently done on *Nix workstations.
BTW: Phin: you’re the BIGGEST nitwit of all. If you don’t even know there are very professional spell checkers for Linux, you haven’t got a clue. And your statement ‘MicroSoft rules’ sort of sounds like a cheer for a Lada, when you lived in Russia 20 years ago and didn’t even know others existed. Don’t pretend to be an expert when you sound like a frustrated gamer who’s only purpose in life is to run the latest (probably illegal) 3D game on his windows box with surround sound, flashy LEDs, modded case and what more. Get a life!

Most of the Adriatic (eg Croatia) and South Africa has place names that are quite ludicrous. I can understand that some of the images may be quite old but there is no excuse for completeley inaccurate place names.

if you want google earth for mac, just download “virtual PC for mac” from limewire. Limewire can be downloaded from www.limewire.com.
Comment by google earth mac | October 28, 2005
Well, if you want GE pro for Linux, just fire up your favorite Overnet client, download winex and GE pro, and run it…
So doing, you will just have thrown grit in Google’s soup, a just back-payment for using so many resources from the Linux community, and giving so little in return. And on the way, in the soup of the morons that insist on software being sold, as if you could sell something that can be duplicated at no cost.
Next time, check whether the air you breathe is free…
Comment by zeslany | November 5, 2005
Is there anywhere besides limwire i can find it this “virtual PC for mac”? limewire and i dont get along. I’m just a simple mac user who wants to be able to see any location on earth. is that really so much to ask?
Comment by keeivo | November 9, 2005
Keeivo, the best way to get Virtual PC is to buy it. In a store. Where they sell it.

Here’s a heads up for the nitwits who are living in their own little insulated Windows only world - Do you use Google ? Google use RedHat Linux. Do you have a PS2 or wan’t a PS3 ? Yep, thats Linux too. Did you watch Star Wars Episode 3 ? Or War Of The Worlds ? Special effects courtesy of ILM (Industrial Light & Magic). Yep, you guessed it ILM use Linux - and Maya. There’s much more of Linux that you indirectly interact with on a daily basis wether you know it or not. No, you might be thinking, “so what” - the point of this is to illustrate that there is a world beyond the world of your own virus infested Windows desktop. There is a world of Mac users, a world of Linux users, and a world where people actually get work done, who actually create things alot more interesting than anything Microsoft has ever done. And for the guy who thinks developing for Windows is where its at - thats not where all the job vacancies are, at least not here in Australia.

they shuld really make google earth availible for mac coz P.Cs suck. I mean i dont want to be vulgar or anything but theres a good reason why microsoft is nicknamed microshit. I mean the stupid system just keeps crashing (thats the reason why control+alt+delete exists). anyways to get to the point MACs RULE, PC SUCKS AND THEY SHOULD MAKE GOOGLE EARTH FOR MAC.

Yeah, it does kinda’ suk. But hey, that’s why they wrote wine.
> Ha ha! Mac sux! Ever see a linux spell check! Heeee!
spell, ispell, aspell to mention a few. Don’t use ‘em much, however. I learned to spell when I was about 12. Mostly I use my computer for computing. Tried to do it that a Windows box once, but quickly realized everything was missing. Had to return it to Toys ‘R Us.

It is just a great shame to find that as l live in a remote area in Australia, our town is just a total blur, and the surrounding 600 miles, We hope to see some updates again one day, that will show us our town,
Eromanga Queensland Australia.

I see the mac-heads have stopped complaining - they must be too busy Googling earth on the mac version!
http://earth.google.com/download-earth.html
Anyway, there’s no doubt that a linux version is in the works - it’s practically inevitable. It’s just going to take some time porting over all of the win32 crap from keyhole. Since the mac version’s available (and OS X is really just BSD under the hood), it won’t be long before I can google the globe w/o having to reboot into XP.
Excellent program - hat’s off to google for making it freely available.

But I must say what little is covered is very nice, good job google hope you guys will always continue the free version.

I am very confused about the “Free” version of Google Earth.
When I did a quite a lot of wed information by using Google Earth (free version) and pass around within the company users, the ID specialist telling me that install Google Earth (free) is not allowed at company pc. – it is because Google only allow free for personal. http://earth.google.com/
I am exhausted to finding the answer form Google or anywhere.
