Firefox Getting Official Google Toolbar
Google is releasing a toolbar for Firefox on July 7, according to a message it sent to developers of the Firefox Googlebar. The message:

I thought I’d drop you a note to give a heads up on something Google will be releasing next week: a version of our IE Toolbar for Firefox. It will most likely be released on July 7th, but press releases will go out at 9pm on July 6th. Since you were in the Google-toolbar-for-firefox space first, it’s conceivable that the press might contact you for comment. If they do it would be great if you could hold of replying until our press releases go out on the 6th.
Some more specifics:
- It will work with Firefox 1.0+
- It will work on Win2k/XP, MacOS X 10.2, and Linux 8.0+
- It has pretty much the same features as the latest IE toolbar except of course for things like the Popup BlockerWe really appreciate the work you folks did to fill this gap in our products for so long. Because of this, we will keep the link to the Googlebar from the toolbar download page so users can make the choice of which toolbar they’d like to install.

Of course, Yahoo and Ask already have Firefox toolbars. Still, Firefox has excellent built-in search capabilities, and so will IE7. I know that I will likely have no toolbars installed in IE7, and I suspect many Firefox users search Google without a toolbar. Are toolbars dying? Discuss amongst yourselves…

toolbars are a kludgy fix for problems that shouldn’t exist.
good riddance I say. All the stuff toolbars have done is fill holes in browsers.

Yeah, I would say that toolbars are dieing slowly. There are only a few that I use such as the Web Developer toolbar and the Alex/PageRank toolbar for Firefox.
I do a lot of my google searching simply by putting in the content in the address bar and then hit enter, finding the first hit on google. Sometimes I’ll just type in ‘google’ and then search from there, but I don’t see how a toolbar would make that any faster for me since I’m on cable and ti seems to be very fast for me already.
