Talk.Google.Com

Neowin has found the talk.google.com domain, which may very well be where we see our Google communications client, whatever it will be. They also have at least some evidence that there is Google IM system running there based on the open source Jabber protocol.
Inquisitive Neowin member Tom Servo, taking a que from member CarlNewton tried to connect to talk.google.com using his Trillian client.
What he got was a secure XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, alternatively known as Jabber) server waiting for connections.
Could this be Google IM waiting to be unleashed? Since the server is using open source technology it’d be wonderful if anyone with a Jabber enabled chat client could use it (Trillian, GAIM, etc) and not just users of Google IM. While this hope is based on speculation, it does have some backing in the form of an active server.
That, plus that a commenter noticed:
http://talk.google.com redirects to http://www.google.com/talk — you may get a “Not found” error, but the fact the redirection is present means it’s going to be used.
That redirect is a big deal, in case you haven’t noticed. At the very least, some sort of Google Talk is being built.

UPDATE: Dirson’s got it too.

looks like the mercury news published something too early…and now has taken the story down.
it confimed the coming IM client.

i had cut and pasted a quote to a friend, so this is all i have…
“We always thought communications as an important part of managing information,` said Georges Harik, director of product management at Google. `If you’re using email, sometimes you want to get a hold of someone immediately.` Google’s own offering will rely on an open protocol called xmpp, which will allow people to connect not just from the Google service, but from other services such as iChat, Gaim and Cerulean Studios’ Trillian, according to Harik.
People seeking to use the Google service will have to have a Google email account, called gmail, Harik added.

Mmmm, it’s also entirely feasible they’re using jabber for an internal IM technology and talk.google.com is the address their employee’s sign into … Just another thing to think about.
I have a hard time buying into them making their own IM client. They already have hello right? Which integrates with blogger, etc as far as I know. Just don’t see why they’d go off and make some new thing from scratch.
Big corporations are getting into the IM thing for internal communications. I worked for a rather large credit card company that made pretty extensive use of it, and was based on jabber.
