Google Unifying Logins
ThreadWatch reports that Google is now telling all Orkut users to upgrade to a full-fledged Google Account, the first move to unify logins accross its properties. Next? My guess, Blogger. Cutting out accounts that don’t upgrade may eliminate a lot of spam blog accounts.
Apparently, there have been problems:

We thank you for your patience while we continue to successfully resolve the reported login issues.
If you are new to this transition, or have trouble logging in please enter your orkut username and password. If you want to link to a different Google Account, you will be given this option after you sign in.
If you have successfully linked a valid Google Account with your orkut login, please use the Google Account to access orkut. Have a great time on orkut.

That on the Orkut front page. The FAQ also says:
Why is orkut migrating to Google Accounts?
Google Accounts are better protected against fraud, impersonation, and abuse. In addition, by upgrading your orkut account to a Google Account, it will be easier to use other Google services like Google Groups, Google Alerts, Froogle Shopping List, Personalized Search, your Personalized Homepage, Google Answers, and many future Google services. You can find out more about Google Accounts at http://www.google.com/help/faq_accounts.html
I just discovered I can’t login to Orkut through Opera. That would suck more if I had used Orkut in months.
UPDATE: Jeremy says, “I guess they’re trying to be a little bit more like Yahoo every day.” Dude, harsh!

[…] There has been a lot of traffic on Google’s WiFi service. Om Malik, and James Enck have rather extensive coverage. My question is really, why? Or is part of their strategy to unify the Google login? […]

[…] Threadwatch has noticed that Google is now moving AdWords to the Google Account login, just like it did with Orkut. Thank god. This means AdSense will likely do the same, and I can’t tell you how many people were infuriated with the fact that they needed two logins for the two services. Additionally, this should mean you won’t get logged out of AdSense after fifteen minutes of inactivity anywhere, which just makes me all warm inside. […]
