How Much Is Your Blog Worth?
Tristan Louis did some math based on the Technorati metrics for all the blogs in the Weblogs Inc network vs. the $25 million the network reportedly sold for. Of course, a blog in a network is worth more than a blog by itself, but it still leaves you with a fun way of putting a price on your own blog.
First, some notable blogs in the Weblogs network (go to Tristan for the whole list):
- Engadget: $7.54 million
- TUAW (Apple blog): $1.046 million
- Google: $297,000
- Microsoft: $148,000
- Blogging E3: $564 (ouch!)
- Blog Maverick (Marc Cuban): $1.082 million
- Jason Calacanis: $646,000
The consumer blogs are far and away the most valuable, accounting for over $15 million of the $25 million.
Now, to perform some calculations on some of my favorite blogs. At $564 per inbound link, here are the values:
- InsideGoogle: $1,231,776
- InsideMicrosoft: $369,420
- Google Blogoscoped: $3,223,260
- Scoble: $6,990,780
- Steve Rubel: $4,290,348
- Search Engine Watch blog: $4,086,180
- Coolz0r: $219,960 (and its still a relatively new blog!)
- Randy Charles Morin (KBCafe.com): $946,392; RSS blog: $225,600; iBLOGthere4iM: $166,944; AdWords blog: $15,228
- Jeremy Zawodny: $2,500,212
- Greg Linden: $752,376
- Search Engine Roundtable: $1,791,828 (quite a wedding present)
Oh, and Tristan’s own blog is worth $350,808. List any others you find interesting, that I missed, or your own blog.

holy crap

Go shit! I’m almost a millionaire. Maybe I’ll retire.

Interesting, but inbound links are not how things like this should be valued… I could create a blog today called “what I think of bloggers” and write 50 sentences a day about 200 bloggers. that blog would be #1 on technorati and have 50,000 inbound links in a year. it doesn’t mean it would have any value.
things that matter: page views, revenue, reputation (which links don’t show).

does it come in promotions? like: 2 blogs in price of one!

[…] Instead of dissecting the situation, people should look at the big picture. Put simply, a group like WIN is worth more than the sum of its parts. So no, my blog isn’t worth anywhere near $54,000. Neither is yours, I’m sure of it. I sure hope we stay away from this line of thinking… […]

My Blog is For Sale
I’m kidding. Really, I am. Then again, if someone really thinks it’s worth $2.5 million (or heck, even half of that), I’ll take it. You see, Tristan used the Weblogs Inc. sale as inspiration for developing a blog valuation metric. In acquiring Weblo…

… But it seems Nathan used “total inbound links” versus “number of sites linked to,” which creates a higher valuation if you use the former. Louis used the latter is his calculations… unless I missed something while skimming through his post. Anyway, Junto Boyz with 1,343 inbound links listed in Technorati would be valued at $758,311.52, but with 342 sites linked to this blog it would be valued at $193,106.88. I’ll take the former valuation:)

[…] In light of recent acquisitions (i.e. AOL buying weblogs inc) we think we should let everyone know anti-blog.com is and always will be for sale (until it’s sold of course). This guy (Tristen I think his name is) has been doing some analysis on the weblogs network using some fancy maths that only the people at nerd house google can understand, so I have valued this site at US$1mill. All offers will be taken seriously, post in comments. […]

i am confused, how can i count mine?
Comment by stanley dirgapradja | October 11, 2005
Indeed, inbound links should be an indicator of value of a blog, but if I were to use one metric that matters the most, it is revenue. The lessons that we learned from the dot-com days (remember the talk about eyeballs?) is that revenue/net income are more important than any measure of traffic or popularity.
Comment by iproceed | October 12, 2005
A lot of the inbound links to the Weblogs Inc blogs come from other Weblogs Inc blogs (see the footer they use). So let’s hope AOL didn’t use this metric to calculate the valuation… ; )
Comment by chris lake | October 17, 2005
I would echo the thoughts of iproceed. From a buisness perspective, we are trying to get at the revenue stream of a blog. This probably derives from visitors or page views.
I’ve written a short piece of this subject for my blog, but raised two points: first, links may not have a consistent relationship with traffic and second, all site visitors (or links) may not be equal.

We created a “closer to the earth” tool on pingoat which can be accessed on the link below, and we would love to hear some opinions
