Google Calendar Expected Tomorrow

Erick Schonfeld says that the rumor is that Google will unveil the long-ago rumored Google Calendar at Tuesday’s When 2.0 conference at Stanford. I’ll be eagerly awaiting it, but I’m not sure how many people will actually use it. How many people use group calendars?

More importantly, will Google Calendar use some company’s calendar format (not Googly), a brand-new incompatible format (Googly), offer converters from but not to other formats (very Googly, a year or two into the beta), or will Google do the smart and diplomatic thing? Will Google Calendar steal some of Microsoft’s thunder and support RSS SSE?

If it doesn’t, it will when everyone else starts supporting it. SSE is too useful to lose, even if it was Microsoft’s idea.

  3. SSE is useful, but shoe-horning calendar data into RSS just to use SSE misses the entire point of XML. More:

  4. As for who will use it, I know I will, but not for work but instead for family. The ability for my wife and I to be able to schedule things and refer to it while I am at work will be pretty nice. If somebody offers me tickets to a sporting event, I can quickly check the calendar to see if that time slot is free, and I can also check to see if little Johnny has hockey practice or swimming on a certain night. We’ve tried some other apps but haven’t had much luck.

  16. Personally, I live in Outlook. If Google can make a calendar-killer… I’m there. I expect compatability (import/export) though. Maybe even synchronization with Outlook through the desktop bar? The biggest thing though is being able to send people to calendar.google.com/devin.reams/today/. Then and only then will my life be complete.
