Alternate Google Homepage

I like the idea of people creating alternate versions of the Google homepage, whether to add functionality, design cool, or just to make a political statement.

Google.vc is “very cool”, ha ha. It contains an implementation of Google X, the latest articles from the Google blog, the Google press center, and Yahoo Finance on Google, as well as the top ten gainers from Zeitgeist, the Gmail storage counter, top Google News stories, and some Google stock tracking. It even has a link you can email for a Gmail invite.

Now, this page makes a lot of use of screen scraping, as far as I can tell, serving most of its images from the originating sites, using their site design, but it is still pretty useful. Until Google shuts it down, enjoy. Maybe eventually the Google Personalized Homepage will be clean enough to look like this, or you’ll be able to construct an approximation at Live.com.

When is someone going to create Andy Rutledge’s design?
(via Google Blogoscoped, which has a warning about possible malicious code that I could not confirm. Check out their forum for more info if you’re worried)

UPDATE: Jason Schramm posts that someone created Rutledge’s design. It ain’t perfect, but it works.

  1. I thought of making a user script to simplify the Google Homepage, but then I found one at http://userscripts.com/scripts/show/740 though it removes all menu items, and I just want to remove a few of the ones I never use like Froogle.
