Need Some Yahoo Therapy?

Google likes Yahoo

Google’s got some weird “See results for” suggestions once in a while, but this one takes the cake. Search for “therapy products“, and Google suggests searching for “yahoo”. Why?

Well, there’s actually one legitimate explanation: As far as we know, the “See results for” feature works by noticing if a large number of searchers followed up one search with an immediate refinement in their search. For example, if Google sees that a bunch of people searched for “Ford”, and then immediately added “Ford cars” to refine their search, then Google tries to help everybody out by asking if you’d like to do the same, and showing you the first three results.

My guess is that since the results for “therapy products” are actually pretty useless on Google, a lot of searchers immediately decided that they’d be better off with Yahoo. And since plenty of people know that you can get to Yahoo by just searching for it on Google, they did and… tada! And that is why Google thinks Yahoo is your next best bet after a search like this. Mystery solved.

  2. Wow! That is indeed interesting that Google would be nice enough to please it’s customers by linking to the competition.
