Jeez, Matt, Couldya Just Come Clean?

Matt Cutts, in SEO Moz’s comments, basically denies confessing that he is GoogleGuy. Now, he doesn’t deny being GoogleGuy (and I don’t remember him ever straight up doing so), so keep that in mind:

Rand, I didn’t take the question as “Are you GoogleGuy?”. I took the question as “How did you end up doing a bunch of webmaster communication duties?”. Maybe I misheard the question though.

Basically, he’s saying that he was asked “Are you the Google guy”, and not “Are you GoogleGuy?” Matt, regardless of what you thought you were being asked, lots of places (including this here blog) are reporting that you are GoogleGuy, which was sort of an assumed thing anyway. Let’s put it this way: Even if you didn’t admit you are, everyone believes you are GoogleGuy at this point, and you didn’t say at SEOMoz, “Actually, I am not GoogleGuy”.

Now, I think Matt may be one of the coolest people at Google, so I’m asking that he simply face the fact that if he is not GoogleGuy, he should just say so. If he isn’t saying anything, that isn’t avoiding the issue, that is an admission, since a denial costs nothing. If someone was reporting I said something that was untrue, I’d be angry and loud about it, so either get loud or get honest, Matt.

It’s okay. We all love you anyway.
