Google Spreadsheets Gets New Features

Google unveiled a bunch of new features for Spreadsheets today. They are:

  • Multi-line cells - hit CTRL+Enter to write a second line in a cell
  • Contacts list - when inviting collaboraters, you can look for them in your Gmail contact list.

  • Spreadsheet sharing - click “Let anyone view” to be able to share your spreadsheet with others. Viewers still must have a Google Account, so not just “anyone” can actually view it.

  • Print - new Print button, to let you print straight from the web application.
  • Export to PDF
  • Import to and export from the Open Document Format
  • Up to 50 people can collaborate on a single spreadsheet simultaneously.
  • Number Format expanded - the Number Format menu has more currency symbols and formats.
  • Merge multiple cells - Merge Cells can merge and unmerge multiple rows at once (horizontally only).
  • Larger files - Files up to 1 megabyte can now be imported, although they are still limited to 10,000 rows, 50,000 cells, 256 columns and 20 sheets.
  • Function dialog - Click More on the Formula tab to get an improved function selector, which also tries to help you understand what the functions do.
  • UI changes - a link to notify of new features, Export submenu in the File menu, text formatting allowed in Edit mode, and a warning to save a spreadsheet so the autosave feature can work.

  2. this is not news, these features were launched 2 weeks ago. i would have thought you would have seen that since you started copying and pasting right under the date “September 7, 2006″.

  3. Google just announced the features yesterday. Look at Technorati, and you’ll see a lot of people didn’t notice the features before Google publicized them. Why, did you blog about them on September 7?

People think it’s new because it is now on Google Blog.
